OUTSIDE THE BOX programme now available

The historic Polish Post Office building, the historic Collegium Maius, the Municipal Swimming Pool in Grunwald and a gym located in the former Eskulap club — these are the venues where audiences will experience this year’s OUTSIDE THE BOX section of the British Film Festival.

For the third time, the British Film Festival invites audiences to explore the cinema of the United Kingdom. OUTSIDE THE BOX once again pushes beyond the boundaries of the traditional cinema experience, bringing films to spaces that are anything but conventional screening rooms. Their architecture, history and everyday purpose become part of the event, with each venue entering into a dialogue with what unfolds on screen.

‍

This year’s programme features four films, four distinct spaces and four different experiences.

On 11 November at 8 pm, audiences will gather at the historic Collegium Maius of Adam Mickiewicz University (10 Fredry Street) for Terence Fisher’s classic horror film Horror of Dracula (Dracula, 1958).

Jonathan Harker arrives at Count Dracula’s castle on a secret mission, but soon falls into the vampire’s trap. When the threat begins to reach those close to him, Dr Van Helsing takes on the evil force. This gothic tale of an immortal count takes on an added dimension within the building’s historic interiors — a setting whose own history evokes an atmosphere of mystery.

‍

Then, on Friday 13 November at 11 pm, the Municipal Swimming Pool in Grunwald (4 Taborowa Street) will host The Descent (2005), Neil Marshall’s horror film in which an expedition by six friends into a cave system turns into a claustrophobic fight for survival.

As the women lose their way in an unfamiliar labyrinth, old wounds, secrets and dark instincts come to the surface. But this will be more than just a horror screening at a swimming pool. The water, the pool’s distinctive space and its unique atmosphere will become part of the experience, building tension and bringing the film to life in a setting far removed from a traditional cinema.

‍

On Saturday 14 November at 2 pm, the historic Polish Post Office building (77 Kościuszki Street) will provide the setting for an encounter with a familiar character from children’s imaginations.

In Postman Pat: The Movie (2014), the lovable postman decides to try his luck on a televised talent show. He heads to the big city, where he enters a world of celebrities, cameras and grand ambitions. Away from his hometown, he must find his way in a reality where fame can change everything. Screening the film in a post office offers a chance to see the postman’s adventures in a place naturally associated with his everyday work. This family-friendly screening is dedicated to the youngest members of the audience.

‍

The final venue this year is BodyLab gym (27 Marcelińska Street), located in the former legendary Eskulap club, a place filled with memories for many Poznań residents.

On Sunday 15 November at 7 pm, the space will host Shane Meadows’ TwentyFourSeven (1997). The film is the director’s feature debut, starring Bob Hoskins as a mentor who offers young people an alternative to the hopelessness of life in a small town. Through sport, he tries to teach them discipline, responsibility and mutual respect. This story of community, ambition and the search for one’s own path meets a setting where the body, physical effort and movement take on particular significance.
