COMMONWEALTH
One of the most obvious consequences of any colonisation is confrontation.
The coloniser imposes their authority, attempting to subjugate the local culture, convinced of their own superiority. Yet this power operates in both directions; the influence is mutual. The films presented in this section explore this process in various ways: in the attempts to bridge extreme otherness, in appropriating the coloniser’s literary canon, in recognising the hypocrisy of empire, or in mythologising the so-called civilising mission.
