An adaptation of Raynor Winn’s bestselling memoir, written for the screen by Rebecca Lenkiewicz (IDA, HOT MILK). When a couple lose both their home and their health, they make a radical decision – to walk the 1,000-kilometre-long South West Coast Path. Moving, visually stunning ode to the power of nature and the resilience of the human spirit.
Some stories are so extraordinary they feel ready-made for the screen. Such is the case with Raynor Winn’s remarkable memoir The Salt Path, a worldwide publishing phenomenon.
The film marks the feature debut of Marianne Elliott, previously known for her acclaimed work in theatre, with a screenplay by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, one of Britain’s most celebrated screenwriters, co-author of the Oscar-winning IDA and writer of HOT MILK from this year’s High Season section.
With remarkable tenderness, Elliott tells the story of a couple who, in a single devastating moment, lose everything - their home, their security, and soon after, their health, as the husband is diagnosed with a terminal illness. In an act of desperation and courage, they embark on a thousand-kilometre trek along the South West Coast Path - known as the salt path.
This legendary trail, winding along the wild and breathtaking shores of Cornwall and Devon, becomes not just a test of endurance but a profound journey towards emotional healing. It’s a road movie in the truest sense - one where nature itself takes centre stage, and every step becomes a metaphor for resilience, love and the stubborn human will to keep going, even when the odds seem impossible.
The film’s quiet power lies above all in Gillian Anderson’s deeply felt, nuanced performance, perfectly matched by the gentle strength of Jason Isaacs, with whom she shares an unmistakable on-screen chemistry.
