An adaptation of a nineteenth-century novel by one of Britain’s most celebrated authors, Jane Austen. The Bennet sisters must secure advantageous marriages to safeguard their family’s future. As fate would have it, two wealthy gentlemen moved into the neighbourhood.

This year marks the twentieth anniversary of Joe Wright’s PRIDE & PREJUDICE (2005). Upon its release, the film received mixed reviews. But it has since grown into a cult favourite – as evidenced by the jubilant celebrations in the UK, including special cinema screenings that have proved hugely popular. We are delighted to join in this celebration, especially as there is a second reason to rejoice: 2025 also marks the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen's birth.

The 1990s saw the explosion of a phenomenon known as ‘Austenmania’. It was all sparked by successful adaptations: the film SENSE & SENSIBILITY (1995) and the television series PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (1995). Joe Wright, then a debut director, sought to revive interest in Austen’s work; however, he broke from the heritage-cinema aesthetic typical of literary adaptations. Rather than painstakingly recreating the period, he focused on character, particularly Elizabeth Bennet. It is through her perspective that we experience the world of the film: walls stripped bare, sheets of rain, and majestic cliffs. While the aesthetic may echo the passionate novels of the Brontë sisters, Wright captured the essence of Austen’s witty and acerbic prose with a fresh approach that continues to enchant and inspire new generations to explore her work.

Mrs Bennet (Brenda Blethyn) is on a mission to marry off her five daughters advantageously. Only in this way can they avoid poverty, as without a male heir, their family estate is set to pass to the disagreeable cousin, Mr Collins (Tom Hollander). Fortunately, the wealthy and charming Mr Bingley (Simon Woods) moves into the neighbouring county of Netherfield. Alongside him comes his friend, the equally wealthy but far less amiable Mr Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen, in his first major role since Succession). While the shy Jane (Rosamund Pike) becomes intrigued by the enchanted Mr Bingley, the outspoken and clever Elizabeth (Keira Knightley, in her first Oscar-nominated role) grows increasingly averse to the proud Mr Darcy - who, despite himself, finds his interest in the headstrong Miss Bennet steadily growing.
