Celebrating its 25th anniversary, Stephen Daldry’s coming-of-age classic stars a marvellous Jamie Bell as a boy who stumbles into a ballet class and discovers his gift, encouraged by Mrs Wilkinson (Julie Walters). But standing in his way are his father and brother, who see his passion as a threat to both his roots and his masculinity.

Marking its twenty-fifth anniversary, this coming-of-age gem puts dance centre stage. Set in a mining community where the need for artistic expression is seen as a whim. This is particularly true against the backdrop of intensifying strikes by English miners trying to combat the anti-social policies of the Iron Lady. Thus, BILLY ELLIOT, an example of new English cinema, combines the social edge characteristic of the films we present in the MIND THE GAP section with heart-warming comedy. It won over audiences and critics alike, contributing to its success in the form of three Academy Award nominations, including one for debut director Stephen Daldry, and three BAFTA awards, including one for Jamie Bell's title role.

From an early age, Billy Elliot is instilled with the stereotype of masculinity associated with strength, toughness and physicality, which should be pragmatic. So when the boy accidentally stumbles upon a ballet class, he decides to delve into the hitherto unknown realms of sensitivity and delicacy, which he can express through body movement accompanied by music. Mrs Wilkinson (Julie Walters) notices the boy's talent and does everything she can to develop it and open the door to the world of art for him by auditioning him for the Ballet School. However, Billy's father and brother stand in his way, for whom such softening of their son threatens to detach him from his proletarian roots and masculinity. With Mrs Wilkinson's help, Billy discovers the power he can exude through his passion for performance.

Daldry’s film is both a response to Thatcher’s punishing policies towards working people and a heartfelt tale of a boy torn between two worlds. Inspired by the immense tradition of the musical, BILLY ELLIOT brims with energy, buoyancy and unforgettable dance sequences. Little wonder it leapt so successfully from screen to stage, becoming a Broadway sensation.
