Thanks to our partnership with the British Council, we are presenting short films nominated for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) award in the category dedicated to short films. The programme features five movies that are incredibly diverse in terms of theme, form and genre: ROCK, PAPER, SCISSORS, MILK, STOMACH BUG, and THE FLOWERS STAND SILENTLY, WITNESSING.

The BAFTA Awards ceremony is the most prestigious event in the British film industry, and the Golden Mask statuette is often referred to as the “British Oscar.” The British Academy has been recognising outstanding achievements in cinema since 1948. In the 1960s, it introduced the category for Best British Short Film. Alongside the biggest stars of British cinema, the BAFTA stage welcomes filmmakers working on shoestring budgets (often debutants), yet armed with fiercely valid, uncompromising voices. This year’s selection once again showcases exceptional creative expression and bold, socially and politically engaged storytelling.

ROCK, PAPER, SCISSORS (dir. Franz Böhm), winner of the 2025 BAFTA for Best Short Film, stands out for its unflinching courage in portraying a 17-year-old Ukrainian boy living through the horrors inflicted by the Russian terrorist state. In the light of current global events, the documentary THE FLOWERS STAND SILENTLY, WITNESSING (dir. Theo Panagopoulos) feels equally devastating — an archival piece that brings to life images of Palestine from nearly a century ago, capturing a breathtaking land of flourishing nature long before it was razed to the ground by Israeli colonial ambitions.

The poetic documentary MILK (dir. Miranda Stern), evocative of AFTERSUN, weaves together fragmented memories of the director’s late mother while serving as a personal act of therapy and confrontation with her fatal struggle with addiction. Another portrait of a mother in the film MARION (dir. Joe Weiland, Finn Constantine), where the eponymous heroine walks a fine line between life and death through a controversial sport. A daring act to prove her courage in a misogynistic world.

Finally, STOMACH BUG (directed by Matty Crawford), a visually polished body horror film about a single father desperately trying to be present in the life of his daughter, who is gradually forgetting her roots.
