ANIMAL FARM
ANIMAL FARM
The long-awaited animated adaptation of George Orwell’s timeless classic, directed by Andy Serkis. When a group of farm animals rise against their human masters to create a fair and equal society, their dream of freedom is soon put to the test. A wise and gently humorous modern parable about power, corruption and manipulation.
Fourteen years after first conceiving the project, Andy Serkis - the acclaimed actor and director best known for his role as Gollum - brings to life his long-awaited animated version of Orwell’s Animal Farm. The story follows a group of animals who rebel against their farmer, dreaming of a just and equal community. Yet their utopia begins to crumble as ambition and the hunger for power infect the new order.
Serkis reimagines Orwell’s satire for the present day, turning it into a reflection on the temptations of capitalism, consumerism and populism. Orwell’s original allegory exposed the mechanisms of power and manipulation in a form both accessible and profound; Serkis honours that legacy while giving it a contemporary resonance. At the heart of his adaptation stands Lucky – a young pig, torn between competing ideals, searching for his own moral compass. Seeing the events through Lucky’s eyes brings a new emotional depth and a glimmer of hope: even if history often repeats itself, it is the younger generation that may ultimately bring change.
The beautifully crafted animation contrasts the fairy-tale charm of the farm with the growing complexity of its political reality. Serkis insists that this story had to be told through animation - to give it lightness, detach it from literalism and preserve a perspective of innocence in a world of growing anxiety. Alongside serious reflections, the film introduces a light, family-friendly tone and elements of slapstick humour. Maintaining this delicate balance, which will appeal to viewers of all ages, was one of the biggest challenges for the filmmakers.
The voice cast includes Seth Rogen, Gaten Matarazzo, Laverne Cox, Glenn Close, and Kieran Culkin. ANIMAL FARM is an accessible yet thought-provoking lesson about the birth of authoritarianism, the power of community, the value of work, and the need to be mindful of dividing others into better and worse. These universal warnings remain urgently relevant today. Andy Serkis successfully familiarises young viewers with topics that are difficult even for adults.
The film had its world premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and was part of this year's selection at the BFI London Film Festival. The British Film Festival proudly hosts the first Polish screenings of ANIMAL FARM.
